International Harvester has an incredibly rich history. They were a major player in the agricultural industry and built their name by producing quality tractors and equipment for farmers.
In 1902, McCormick, Deering Harvester Company, Plano Manufacturing Company, Champion Line and Milwaukee Harvester Company merged to form International Harvester. Banker J.P. Morgan provided the financing for the merger.

The history of International Harvester dates back to 1830s Virginia, where Cyrus Hall McCormick invented a horse-drawn reaper. He then began field-demonstration and received a patent for his machine in 1834. He moved to Chicago in 1847 and founded the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company.
In 1902, the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company and Deering Harvesting Machine Company merged to form International Harvester. The combination was financed by J.P. Morgan and resulted in a $150 million company.
IH was an industry leader in the agricultural world, and its Farmall brand of tractors were extremely popular. However, in 1985, IH faced a difficult economy and financial challenges. They partnered with J.J Case & Company to become IH Case, but continued truck operations. The truck division was renamed Navistar International, which is still a public company today.
To keep up with their market share, IH developed a number of innovations for their tractor lineup. One of these was the 86 series Pro Ag Line tractors, which included models with a new cab and a control center that allowed the driver to adjust many features of the tractor from the cab. These tractors were also more efficient, which increased the profitability of the IH line.
During the 1950s and 1960s, IH also made other improvements to their tractors, including a new rear axle and front suspension system. This gave the tractors a smoother ride and more balance.
In 1961, IH branched out into home lawn and garden equipment with a line of Cub Cadet lawn mowers and snow blowers, compost shredders, rotary tillers, and power washers. The company also produced M1 rifles for the United States Army.
IH was also a major manufacturer of medium-duty trucks. They also made body-on-chassis conventional (type C) school buses. In addition, they manufactured the chassis of many commercial vehicles, such as fire trucks, ambulances, and garbage trucks. The company also developed a jet turbine-powered tractor called the International HT-341.
Truck Parts
When it comes to classic vehicles, few can match the legacy of the International Harvester. Originally known for its horse-drawn farm equipment, IH began producing gasoline-powered trucks and buses in the 1930s. It also produced oil tankers, and later SUVs like the Scout and Traveler.
The International Harvester Company was formed in 1902, when McCormick, Deering Harvester Company, Plano Manufacturing Company and Champion Line teamed up to manufacture a variety of farm machinery. Among them were tractors, combines and a wide range of other equipment.

Over the course of the 1960s, IH attempted to restructure. They sold off many of their non-agricultural business units including construction equipment, solar equipment and lawn and garden products.
At that time, the IH truck and engine division was considered the second-most important part of the company behind its agricultural product line. This was mainly because the motor truck division handled engineering, production, sales and other related activities for the entire company.
After the sale of its agricultural products division to Tenneco in 1984, International Harvester refocused on commercial trucks and engines under the Navistar International Corporation name. This change was effective in 1986, but the IH name and logo remained in place until 1987.
Today, IH is still in business, although it now has a different focus. IH is now a subsidiary of CNH Global, and its farm equipment products make up half of its overall agricultural line.
IH trucks are made up of a broad range of heavy-duty commercial pickups and vans. These include the K-Series, the L-Series and the W-Series.
