In a typical car engine, there are six main components which make up an engine – the combustion chamber, an ignitor, a compression chamber, a cylinder head and final driveshaft. As of late 2021, there have been a wide array of power sources now available or possible for cars and other vehicles to use. Diesel engines, gasoline engines, and hybrid/electric engines all have their own advantages and disadvantages. How does one choose what engine they would like to install in their vehicle?
Many vehicle owners have the same general question in mind; how will they know how many cylinders to buy when it comes to purchasing a car engine? There are some factors to consider on this important decision. One thing to keep in mind is that even though the number of cylinders in your engine has may be listed, it may not be the maximum number that you can have. Also, your car engine’s capacity, also referred to as GSA or Gross Combination Servicing Capability, will determine how many cylinders your vehicle can have.
For gasoline powered engines, the GSA size is based on the manufacturer’s recommended maximum fuel system capacity. The reason why this number is suggested by manufacturers is because a car engine needs to consume combustion strokes (the actual firing of the piston in the engine) in order to produce a combustion product, such as gasoline or diesel fuel. An engine without sufficient combustion strokes cannot produce fuel and must therefore be shut down, and if shut down at a high enough speed, it can permanently damage the engine. With diesel fuel engines, the GSA size is based on the number of cylinders required to attain maximum energy output, which is a measure of torque and horsepower. Both diesel and gasoline engines require fewer cylinders than their electric counterparts in order to attain full power.
Gasoline engines run off of two types of fuel – gasoline and diesel. The two differ slightly from one another depending on the temperature at which they are burned. While a two-stroke engine runs off of one type of fuel at a regular predetermined rate, an internal combustion engine burns its fuel in an unending, constant cycle, thus producing maximum fuel over the span of a complete combustion. An internal combustion engine is more energy efficient than a two-stroke engine for energy consumption but produces far less exhaust gasses. In other words, it is the most economical type of car engine to own.
Diesel engines are built around a system of main parts. The headlight, the radiator, the carburetor, the exhaust manifold, and the flywheel all are part of the main parts of the engine in a diesel engine. The main parts themselves can be constructed separately or as a unit. As the name implies, the flywheel is the largest component of a car engine. It spins around an inner clutch in order to regulate the flow of kinetic energy that goes into the engine. Since the clutch is very small, it requires the least amount of maintenance and can handle a lot of horsepower, making it a popular choice among car engines.
Finally, there are the cylinders. Car engines, like most things, work on smaller components. Jaguar XJs, however, has three sets of cylinders, each of which is made from a different type of metal. These include steel, aluminum, and a hollow metallic shell that look a bit like an airplane wing.
