While most cars come with the factory alternator, it is necessary to know how to change an alternator for safety reasons. A poorly maintained alternator can lead to battery failure, resulting in a loss of power to the vehicle. Knowing how to change an alternator will prevent a major loss of power and increase the reliability of the vehicle. Here are a few simple steps to follow.

Battery isolators are used on cars that have battery packs as primary power source instead of an engine. They ensure that a battery pack does not over charge and cause damage to the alternator. Battery isolators use a small battery, like the size of a small battery and are placed by the side of the engine, with a series of relays that allows the charge to be turned off when the battery is fully charged.

Power distributors, or power units, are responsible for charging the batteries. These often have their own wires and belts connect to the alternators. The power distributors must be manually turned on and off, which requires some experience and knowledge of auto electricals. These types of alternators may be more expensive than others, but they will also save you the trouble of having to figure out how to change an alternator. When you are purchasing a new power distributor, be sure that it has the capacity that you’ll need.

Engine isolators, or power units, control the amount of power sent to the engine. They are needed only when your car needs extra power, such as high engine temperatures, or when the battery is low on power. Power isolators are available in both battery and gas forms. Most vehicles come with the basic unit, but it is a good idea to purchase the additional unit, which allows for more precise control. Once you have found the correct power isolator, you’ll need to remove the engine. You’ll find brackets on the firewall that connect the alternator to the engine compartment, or can be removed with a Phillips screwdriver.

After you have removed the engine, and everything apart from the wires, disconnect the battery cables. Connect the positive and negative cable with the positive terminal on the alternator, then connect the mounting bolts to hold everything together. Your alternator will now be attached to the engine and all you need to do is replace the alternator with a new one.

Most newer cars have factory-installed Alternators, but older ones may require you to purchase an upgraded unit. There are many different alternators for sale, including high performance alternators for your car’s engine. If you’re not sure what type you need, you can get an estimate at your local auto parts dealer. They can help you determine exactly what type you need. Whether you need a battery replacement or a gas alternator, there’s a surefire way to change an alternator.
